molecular genetics Flashcards
PCR
Polymerase chain reaction
Ribose group numbers in DNA
Corresponds with the number of carbons in the group and shows which end of the molecule is which
What does the phosphate group in DNA do?
Gives the DNA a negative charge
Now is each base pained?
By hydrogen bonding with its specific partner (A with T and C with G)
Parental strand’s role?
Serves as a template that determines the order of nucleotides along a new complimentary strand
Base group’s role within DNA?
Stores generic info
Why do adenine and thymine pair together?
Both have 2 hydrogen bonds
Why do guanine and cytosine pair?
They both have 3 hydrogen bonds
Rate of DNA replication?
500 - 5000 base pairs per minute
How is a replication bubble formed?
DNA unwinds at each origin of replication
How are replication forks created?
DNA synthesis occurs in both strands, in both directions
