Molecular Ecology Flashcards
What are the main problems with breeding within a small population?
Inbreeding, homozygosity, loss of alleles and allele frequency.
Why is inbreeding a problem?
Reduction in fitness: poor resistance to disease, loss of fecundity, progeny survivability, extinction.
What is this reduction in fitness known as?
Inbreeding depression.
What is homozygosity?
It is the reduction of the number of alleles as a consequence of inbreeding depression.
A loss of genetic diversity is known as what?
Genetic bottleneck.
What are molecular markers?
Sections of the genome, generally small, that are expected to represent larger sections of the genome.
What molecular markers are tandemly repeated, e.g. ATATATAT ?
Minisatellites
