Q

What is trimethylaminuria?

A

Bacteria in the gut convert choline to trimethylamine (which smells like fish) – in normal people, this is converted into trimethylamine N-oxide by flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3).

However, in people with trimethylaminuria, there is a mutation in FMO3, so trimethylamine accumulates – so it smells like fish.
