Q

Peion wants to measure how much carbon dioxide gas is produced when magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃) reacts with nitric acid (HNO₃).
Describe how he should set up the apparatus
[5]

A

Get a conical flash, place a bung with a hole in it, put a delivery tube in the hole. Get a trough of water and place the delivery tube in it and then place it in an upside-down water filled measuring cylinder or syringe to collect the gas.

Q

Nolo has set up his apparatus to collect hydrogen gas produced from the reaction between magnesium and sulfuric acid.

(a) Describe how Nolo should use the apparatus to collect the hydrogen gas.
[3]

(b) Nolo notices that some magnesium remains unreacted at the end of the experiment.
What should he do to ensure all the magnesium reacts next time?

A

a
Weigh 10 cm3 of sulphuric acid into a connical flask and then place 0.15g of magnnesium to the connical flask place bung into the flask immediately. Gas produced will collect in measuring cylinder

Record the final volume of hydrogen in the measuring cylinder

Weigh a dry evaporating basin then place conical flask content into it . use distilled water to rinse the conical flask 3 times and place washings in the evaporating basin.

Place evaporating basin in water bath till theres only dry solid in it
If this takes too long a bunsen burner flame under a sand bath can be used instead.

b
add more sulphuric acid in excess

Q

A student reacts a solid sample of basic copper carbonate (chemical formula: CuCO₃·Cu(OH)₂) with dilute sulfuric acid. A gas is produced during the reaction.

The student wants to measure the volume of gas produced.
Describe how the student could set up the apparatus to collect and measure the volume of gas displaced in this reaction.
[4]

A

Weigh 1.5g of cuso3.cuOH2 and add it to a conical flask

Measure 50 cm³ of H2so4 in a 50cm3 measuring cylinder, add it to a conical flask immediately add the stopper so no gas escapes. The gas will collect in the measuring cylinder

Record the final volume of co2 in the measuring cylinder

Q

Pohs sets up his equipment to collect gas from a chemical reaction using a measuring cylinder filled with water.
State two things that could go wrong during this experiment and explain how each would affect the results.

A

hole in delivery tube can cause the gas to leak

gas can dissolve in water

some reactant may not react making findings less accurate

A student investigated the volume of hydrogen gas produced when magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid. The student placed a strip of magnesium ribbon into a conical flask containing hydrochloric acid and immediately placed a bung in the flask. The flask was connected to a measuring cylinder filled with water to collect the gas. However, no gas was collected in the measuring cylinder. (a) Suggest one reason why no gas was collected.
there was no water in the measuting cylinder the bung placed in the connical flask fast enough a hole in delivery tube
