Molars Flashcards
1) 3-5 cusps, with at least 2 facial
2) large occlusal surface
molars general characteristics
1) crowns wider faciolingually than mesiodistally
2) 3 roots - 2 facial and 1 lingual
3) buccal cusps longer than lingual
4) oblique ridges
maxillary molar
1) occlusal view: strong oblique ridge, which is less likely to be crossed by a groove
2) 3 roots widely separated
3) frequently 5th cusp [carabelli’s] on ML
maxillary 1st molar
1) mesiolingual cusp always larger than distolingual cusp
2) cusp of carabelli’s on ML
3) oblique ridge runs ML-DB
maxillary 1st molar right left
1) occusal view - smaller, oblique ridge usually interrupted by a groove
2) roots close together
3) no 5th cusp
4) DL cusp smaller than 1st or missing
5) less symmetrical - rhomboidal shape
maxillary 2nd molar
1) ML cusp larger than DL cusp
2) oblique ridge ML - DB
maxillary 2nd molar right left
1) distolingual cusp progressively smaller or may be missing
2) roots are close or fused
3) no distinct oblique ridge
4) many supplemental grooves
5) mimic 1st or 2nd molar anatomy
maxillary 3rd molar
1) roots fused and curved distally [caution]
2) wider on mesial from facial to lingual than distal
maxillary 3rd molar right left
1) crowns wider mesiodistally than faciolingually
2) 2 roots - mesial and distal
3) lingual cusps are longer than facial cusps
mandibular molar general characteristics
1) 3 facial cusps and 2 facial [buccal] grooves [tell facial from lingual])
2) roots widely separated and vertical [2 root canals on mesial])
mandibular 1st molar
1) distal cusp is smallest facial cusp
2) mesiobuccal to lingual width is greater than distal buccal to lingual width
3) proximal view - buccal height of contour is in cervical 1/3, lingual height of contour is in middle1/3
mandibular 1st molar right left
1) only 2 facial cusps and 1 facial cusp
2) occlusal view - groove well defined and forms a ‘+’ with facial and lingual grooves
3) roots are close together
mandibular 2nd molar
1) proximal view - buccal height of contour is in cervical 1/3, lingual is in middle 1/3
2) mesial buccal prominence at cervical
3) facial - lingual width of mesial surface is greater than distofacial - lingual width
mandibular 2nd molar right left
1) anatomy will mimic 1st or 2nd
2) roots close together or fused
3) many supplemental grooves with central groove
mandibular 3rd molar
1) crown tapers distally, mesial width greater than distal
mandibular 3rd molar right left
