What is enamel hypoplasia?

A

Disruption to the secretory phase of amelogenesis early in development
Tooth has small pits and grooves and deficits

Secretory stage defines the form of the tooth so that’s why it isn’t right shape

How does MIH present?

A
Affects one or more first permanent molar and/or incisors
Demarcated patches, white, brown, cream 
Post eruption breakdown
Missing 6s 
Calculus or heavily restored

What is enamel hypomineralization?

A

There is a disruption in the maturation stage so the enamel present is of poor quality as it hasn’t been mineralised properly

Happens later in development, enamel is normal thickness

White or brown opacities

A

Exposure to chemicals
Peri-natal and neonatal problems
Common childhood illness and medically compromised children
