MODULE VII: Merchandise Flashcards
Burial casket
A casket which is sold for the purpose of interring or entombing with the dead human remains
Cremation casket
An environmentally safe casket which is designed for encasing dead human remains for cremation
Rental casket (ceremonial casket)
A casket which is used as a temporary receptacle for the dead human remains for the purpose of visitation and funeral, with the intention that the remains will be placed in some other suitable container for permanent disposition, while the casket is intended to be reused for the same purpose
Green (natural, biodegradable, environmentally-friendly casket / containers)
A natural, eco friendly approach to death care that utilizes products, services, and merchandise, that are free of toxic / hazardous materials, are biodegradable, or that minimize the use of energy
Solid wood
A product that, except in some hardware components, is made from lumber cut into boards from the trunk of a tree;
The casket shell has no components formed from wood by-products
Hardwood
Any tough, heavy timber with a compact texture;
Any deciduous tree (any three that loses its leaves annually)
Select hardwood (Salix)
A casket constructed from many different species of wood (example: poplar, cottonwood);
Sometimes referred to as ___ or willow;
The component parts of a single casket will not necessarily be constructed of the same species of wood
Softwood
Any light, easily cut wood;
Wood from cone bearing (coniferous) or fruit bearing (drupaceous) trees
Engineered wood
A range of derivative wood products, which are manufactured by binding together wood strands, particles, fibers, or veneers, with adhesives to form composite materials. Sometimes referred to as composite wood or manufactured wood products.
Laminates
Made by uniting or bonding superimposed layers of different materials
Wood veneers
Created by gluing a thin layer of superior value or excellent grain to an inferior wood
Corrugated fiberboard
A type of cardboard which is made of alternate folds and ridges
Composite board (fiberboard, particles board, hardboard, pressed board)
Particles of wood bonded together with waterproof glue;
The different types are distinguished by the size and shape of the particles of wood used
Plywood
Thin sheets of wood glued together so that the grains are at right angles to one another;
An odd number of sheets will be used so that the grain on the front and back will always run the same direction
Ferrous metal
Any metal formed from iron (steel or stainless steel)
Steel
A metal alloy consisting mainly of iron and carbon;
Used in caskets, it is low in carbon which keeps it soft (mild) and malleable;
Commercial ____ contains carbon in an amount up to 1.7% as an essential alloying component. May be referred to as carbon ____ based upon the percentage of carbon in the alloy
Gauge
A measurement of the thickness of metals
Ferrous: United States Standard ____; the number of sheets of metal necessary to equal approximately one inch of thickness
Non-ferrous: Brown and Sharpe Method expressed in ounces per square foot
Stainless steel
A metal alloy of steel, chromium, and sometimes nickel which is used in casket construction;
Noted for its ability to resist rust
Alloy
A substance composed of two or more metals
Non-ferrous metal
Any metal which is not formed from iron
Copper
A malleable, ductile, metallic element having a characteristic reddish brown color;
Frequently used in construction of caskets, urns, and vaults, due to its non-corrosive qualities
Wrought copper
Copper metal rolled into sheets
Copper deposit
A casket made from a core of copper metal to which copper ions are combined by an electrolytic process
Bronze
A metal alloy consisting of 90% copper with tin and sometimes zinc comprising the other 10%
