What is the differnce between race and ethnicity?
Race- biological characteristics, ethnicity- social characteristics

Group of individuals thatshare the same historical experience

Binet- to test if children are “ready” for school or not
What is plasticty?
Degreen to which your behavior is modifiable
- no plasticity- hair color, eye color, height
- high plasticity- vocabulary
What is nature vs nurture?
Nature- born with it
Nurture- raised like it
What is the emergenesis principle?
States that genetics are nondeterministics- albert einstein story that we dont know his parents or kids because they were not crazy genuis like him

John locke- watson followed locke as well
What does the limbnic system do and when is it solidified?
Controls impulisivity- age 24-27 in males- age 13-15 in females
What is an idealized child?
The children we imagine before we have our own kids
What is the difference between fraternal and identical twins?
Fraternal- woman release 2 eggs and 2 distinct sperm hit the ova- look differnet chromosomally and can be different genders- are like regular siblings
Identical- hwoman release 1 one and 1 sperm hits ova and then it splits- same gender- match chromosomally
What is a transitional character?
Breaks a family chain- all ancestors are alchoholics and then i decide to never drink and stick with it
What is culture?
Shared system of meaning, customs, beliefs, values, goals, morals, and laws transmitted through generations- culture strongly affects the way we raise children
Difference between individualistic and collectivist?
Individualistic- all about me and what I want and need- american and 30% of world
Collectivist- what is good for the group/ community as a whole- 70% of world and 100% of mammals
What are some of the protective and vulnerablitic factors we are born with?
Protective- food, education, shelter, parental love
Vulnerabilty- drug usage, alcoholism, basically all the opposites of protective ones
What does resilency research teach us?
The kids who are born in terrible circumstances (abuse- emotionally or sexually, etc) dealt with it and managed to grow up to be kind, caring, and productive adults
What is the theory of attachment and who did it?
BOWLBY!
- primary attachment person
- not solidified for 4-5 years
- park experiment
- lasts thru lifetime
- decided by time (how much time spent with baby)
- culture can override instincts

- chimps
- study of mammal in all aspects
- bonding is critical
- mom needs to be in close proximity for childhood

“Wilsons theory”
- he claimed that we are currently altering the species
- cosleeping, breastfeeding, drugged birth
What is the social constructivism theory?
Gender is socially construct (he acts like that becuase he was conditioned to be that way) the oppostie of biological theory

Ecological systems theory (circles)- all systems influence each other constantly
- micro- family, loved ones
- meso- school, work
- exo- laws, policy
- macro- cultural beliefs
- chrono- historical time
What are the 3 components of the psyche?
- the unconscious is motivating you
- id: born with “all about me”
- ego: balance of the two
- superego: conscious (worry always)
What are freuds psychosexual stages?
- needs must be met before move on or fixation occur
- oral (birth-2): suckling
- anal (2-3): potty training
- phallic (3-6): discover genitals
- latency (6-12): hang with same sex friends- crushes start here for girls
