Position
Relationship of presenting part of fetus to the 4 quad of mat pelvis
Attitude
Relationship of fetal body parts to each other - flexed, deflexed, extended
Lie
relationship of long axis (spine) of fetus to the long axis of the mother. Longitudinal (vertical) or horizontal (transverse) or oblique (diagonal)
Station
Relationship of the presenting part to an imaginary line drawn between the ischial spines of the pelvis. Degree of descent
Types of Positions
L- left R- right A- Anterior T- Transverse P- Posterior S-Sacrum O-Occiput
Positive Signs of Pregnancy
Fetal HR, Visualized with US, movement
Probable Signs of Pregnancy
hCG urine test, Hegar’s sign, Ballottement
Presumptive Signs of pregnancy
Missed period, breast tenderness, fatigue

GBS screen wk 35-37
Fetal Heart Rate
110-160bpm
Fetal Movement
15-20 weeks “quickening” flutter
2nd and 3rd trimester, fetal movement indicates wellbeing - minimum 6 in 2 hours
Three layers of the uterus
Endometrium - inner layer
Myometrium - middle layer
Outer Layer
Which arteries supply the uterus?
Uterine and Ovarian.
The wt of the fetus exerts pressure on the inferior vena cava which can result in 25-30% decrease in Cardiac output –> supine hypotension –> nausea, dizziness, pallor, diaphoresis, decreased blood supply to fetus
Folate/Folic Acid
required for closure of neural tube - 0.6mg in addition to dietary sources: meat, fortified cereal, legumes, green vegetables, oranges
Signs of Approaching Labour
- Presenting part descends - lightening, dropping, SFH dec
- low back ache, pelvic pressure, braxton hicks inc freq
- softening of cervix causes mucous plug expulsion - bloody show
- energy surge- nesting
- slight weight loss
Prelabour Rupture of Membranes
- 6-19% of all births
- risk of cord prolapse
- confirm with nitrazine test, ferning test
