Module 9 Vocab Flashcards
Troposphere
A layer of the atmosphere closest to the surface of the Earth, extending up to approximately 16 km (10 miles).
Stratosphere
The layer of the atmosphere above the troposphere, extending roughly 16 to 50 km (10-31 miles) above the surface of the Earth.
Mesosphere
The middle layer of the atmosphere, extending roughly 50 to 100 km above the surface of the Earth.
Thermosphere
The thickest layer of the atmosphere, extending roughly 80 to 500 km above the surface of the Earth.
Exosphere
The layer of the atmosphere that contains 75% of the total atmospheric weight, extending roughly 500 to 1000 km above the surface of the Earth. The exosphere contains a protective ozone layer, shielding us from harmful UV light.
