  • Im injection given in the vastus lateralus to aid in Vit K dependent clotting
  • Vit k is naturally produced from the intestinal flora that is still developing

    • always test the water
    • acceptable temperature 37.2 degrees celsius - 38 degrees celsius
    • wash from clean to dirty ares
    • shampoo head last to prevent heat loss (hold the baby wrapped in a towel)
    • stay with the baby
    • bath between feedings not after feedings

Describe and identify the nursing interventions and teachings for cord care

A
  • if not already done, apply a plastic clamp 1/2 inch above the skin and cut the extra cord
  • keep the cord clean and dry
  • fasten diaper under the cord to allow the cord to air dry
  • clam can be removed when the end of the cord is dry and crisp (24hrs)
  • report signs of infection
  • assess the cord for 2 arteries 1 vein
  • can take 10 days for the umbilical cord to fall off

  • keep the penis clean, wash with soap and water and dry
  • when the foreskin can retract, they must retract and then clean around the head of the penis and then they can place the skin back
