Module 9: Lesson 3 - Learner autonomy & adapting materials Flashcards

1
Q

What is learner autonomy?

A

Autonomy refers to taking control of your own learning, either independently or in collaboration with others. An autonomous learner will take more responsibility for their own learning and is very likely to be a much more effective learner than those students who are completely reliant on the teacher. Learner training in the classroom encourages autonomy and is an important element of language teaching.

Q

How can you develop autonomy for learners?

A
  • Provide choices: give learners some control over what or how they learn.
  • Learning styles: help them reflect on how they learn best.
  • Transferable skills: valuable training - work on skills they can take outside of the classroom.
  • Encourage self-appraisal: regular check-ins on what they are doing and what they want to do, and for them to self-evaluate.
  • English outside the classroom: encourage learners to work on English outside of the classroom. Like podcasts.
