Module 8 - Plane Surveying Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of plane surveying
A
Involves measuring distances and angles while plotting these observations in the field
2
Q
Advantages (5)
A
- gross mistakes are unlikely since area is at view
- long and tiring measurements of distance are avoided
- method is easy to master
- field notes reduced to minimum
- work is interesting and survoyr sees map grow
3
Q
Disadvantage (5)
A
- equipment is bulky and awkward
- rain and wind stop activities
- time consuming operation
- not as accurate as other methods of surveying
- impratical in areas of bush and heavy wooden
4
Q
Methods involved in plane tabling (4)
A
- radiation
- triangulation
- traversing
- resection
5
Q
Basic rules for setting out (4)
A
- best position fix is done from nearest control point .
- orenation must be checked into another point
- best orenintation is to the longest and clearest point
- orientation should be checked periodically whilst at the station and always before leaving station.
6
Q
Equipment (5)
A
- plane table
- alidade
- plane table and compass
- plumbing fork
- plane table spirt level
7
Q
Use of plane table(4)
A
- production of maps and plans of small area
- filling in details between control points
- for location contours
- when existing maps and plane are reviewed
8
Q
Importance points to bear in mind when setting up plane table(6)
A
- table should be level when erected
- table should be a workable height
- do not work in bad weather
- get to know area being surveyed
- always recheck oreintation
- each ray should be identified
9
Q
Plane table
A
Used to draw angles or directions between survey station or detail points into portable drawing table field.
