MODULE 8: Non-Infectious Diseases Flashcards
Identify and Explain the cause of Myopia (short-sightedness)
Cause: The eyeball is longer than normal or the cornea is more curved than normal causing light to be too refracted as it focuses infront of the retina, images seen are then too blurred/sharp
Identify and Explain the cause of Hyperopia (Far-sightedness)
Cause: The cornea is more flat than normal, the eyeball is shorter than normal and the lens is not round enough, causes light to be not refracted enough, images seen are then too blurred as it focused behind the fovea
Evaluate the effectiveness of two technologies used to address vision disorder
Spectacles/contacts-> simple but may be expensive
Myopia: Corrective artifical lens with a concave lens can adjust the angle light enters in a way so light is focused on the retina, diverging the image.
Hyperopia: Corrective artificial lens with a convex lens can adjust the angle light enters in a way so light is focused on the retina, converging the image.
Cataract Surgery-> Shape of artifical lens cannot accodmate for light reflected off objects distances away also cannot change shape, quick and painless procedure
Intraocular lens implantation (ILO) corrects cataracts. A surgical procedure removes the cloudy lens for the lens capsule and inserts an artificial one.
Evaluate the effectiveness of educational campaigns on Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes
Educational campaigns are limited as it only raises awareness , encourages people to pick up on healty habits and receive checkups and deters people from unhealthy habits. It is ineffective in preventing Type 1 diabetes as it is not related to lifestyle factors, but could be effective in preventing the incidence of Type 2 diabetes as it can be avoided with the right dietary choices and exercise.
Identify the function of the Auditory Nerve
Transfers sound vibrations to the temporal lobe of the brain for processing
