Module 7 - Taxonomy Flashcards
Why do we classifying organisms?
It helps us to identify them and to relate them to other species. The systematically placed in order helps to have a basic construction pattern and common characteristics of each group.
Name the six kingdoms.
Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Protists (malaria), Fungi (Mushroom), Plantae (Plants), Animalia (Animals);
What is meant by the term ‘binomial nomenclature’?
It is the system that scientific names are standardised through internationally recognised ‘Codes of Nomenclature’. The scientific name refers to the same animal/plant to anyone anywhere in the world. The names are given in Latin (either underlined or in italic font) and consists of Genus (capital letter) + Species (lower casing) e. g. Lion = Panthera leo.
