Occupational identity
a composite sense of who one is and wishes to become as an occupational being generated from one’s history of occupational participation
Christiansen (1999) makes 4 propositions about occupation and identity, what are they ?
- Identity is an overachieving concept that shapes and is shaped by our social relationships
- Identities are closely ties to what we do and our interpretations of those actions in our social context
- Identities provide an important central figure in a self narrative or life story that provides coherence and meaning for everyday events and life itself
- because life meaning is derived in the context of identity, it is an essential element in promoting wellbeing and life satisfaction
