Module 7 - Cerebrovascular Accident Care Flashcards
What is a neuron’s source of ATP? How does this differ from other cell types?
Glucose. This differs because the ONLY source of ATP for a neuron is glucose while other cell types can obtain ATP via the breakdown of other molecules.
What are the typical membrane potentials for each stage of the action potential (resting, depolarization, peak, hyperpolarization)?
Resting: -70 mV
Depolarization: -55 mV
Peak: +40 mV
Hyperpolarization: -90 mV
What takes place at a synapse?
Neurotransmitters are released to the next neuron across the synaptic cleft.
What is an afferent nerve?
A bundle of neurons carrying sensory information from the body to the spinal cord.
What is an efferent nerve?
A bundle of neurons carrying motor instructions from the brain to the body (muscles and glands)
