Make sure to double check what meds
Double check all high risk drugs.
Ex. Insulin and Heparin
What is a double check
Having another nurse to double check the medication in your syringe before injecting it
Overdose risk of insulin
Can drop patients blood sugar to drop dangerously low. Often to the point of fatality
Overdose of heparin
Can cause the pt to lose their ability to form blood clots.
What is a mil
A mil is one one thousandth
always question provider when they say mil
What to do when receiving short hand med orders
Extremely dangerous. Always question orders when they contain short hand.
“give 4 and 4” meaning
4 mg of morphine and 4 mg of zofran.
Never accept “give 4 and 4” and politely question
Proper Patient education prior to administering med
Make sure to properly educate patient on desired and undesired effects of the med so they alert you of any negative side effects. Will also let you know if the patient has experienced side effects previously
What to do when you make an error with medication
Need to take ownership of the error and report it
-inform the provider of the error
-inform the patient of the error
-write a report about the error
