Module 6 - Definitions Flashcards
What is an arene?
Aromatic compounds containing a benzene ring as part of their structure.
What is the molecular formula of benzene?
C6H6
What causes the central ring inside of benzene?
The outer electron from the p-orbital of each carbon atom is delocalised into the centre, this overlap of electrons results in the formation of pi-bond.
What is the mechanism and reagents for the nitration of benzene?
Reagents: conc nitric acid in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid.
Mechanism: Electrophilic substitution
What is the mechanism and conditions for the halogenation of benzene?
Mechanism: Electrophilic substitution
Conditions: iron bromide catalyst (FeBr3) or aluminium chloride catalyst (AlCl3)
What is the equation for the formation of the electrophile for the nitration of benzene?
HNO3 + 2H2SO4 = NO2+ + 2HSO4- + H3O+
