Module 6 Flashcards
1
Q
Describe how you could produce a calibration curve for glucose
A
- use distilled water and glucose solutions to produce dilutions
- add benedicts solution and heat in a water bath for 5 minutes
- use a know volume of a solution
- record absorbance using a colorimeter
- plot concentration of solution against absorbance
2
Q
Describe how you would determine the concentration of glucose in a urine sample using your calibration curve
A
- sample with same volume as those used to produce calibration curve
- add same volume of Benedict’s solution and heat in a water bath at the same temperature for the same time
- read off concentration (x axis) against absorbance (y axis)
3
Q
a level knowledge!!
Give 2 reasons why a weight loss programme could be used to treat type 2 diabetes but not type 1 (2)
A
- type 1 don’t produce insulin
- in type 2, receptors lack sensitivity to insulin
- weight not linked to type 1 diabetes
