Module 53 Flashcards
Population size
Of individuals in a given area
Population density
of individuals in a given area divided by the size the area of
Geographic range
The area over which a population is spread
3 types of distributions
1) random
2) uniform
3) clumped
Random
No pattern
Uniform
Individuals are spread evenly from each-other
Crumped
Individuals in one area
Sex ratio
Ratio of males to females
Population age structure
Describes the number of individuals in different age categories
Per capital growth rate
How much a population a growing
Survivorship curves
The probability of species surviving over their lifetime
Type 1
High survival throughout their life then sharply declines
Examples: humans
Type 2
Organisms experience steadily declining survival throughout their entire life
Examples: birds
Type 3
Sharp drop in survival early in life and slow decline throughout the rest of their lives
Example: amphibians
R selected species
Species that have very fast reproductive success
Example: mosquitoes and flies
