Q

What are measures to prevent and resolve water erosion?

A

The main goal is to prevent soil erosion at the start. This can be done by four types of measures.
1. Structural measures: terracing, stone walls
2. Vegetative measures: cover crops, mulch, agroforestry
3. Agricultural measures: contour ploughing, no-till ag
4. Management measures: grazing management, prescribed fire

Q

What are the five forms of soil erosion?

A
  1. Interrill/sheet erosion
  2. Rill erosion: 30cm deep and 50cm wide.
  3. Gully erosion: depth and width >50cm
  4. Stream/river bank erosion
  5. Mass movement: creep erosion and landslides

13
Q

What does Lane’s balance describe?

A

It is a balancing act; namely, the river catchment is stable when the aggregating and degrading forces that apply to water and sediment are balanced.

14
Q

What do the symbols on Lane’s balance mean?

A

The symbols refer to:
- Qs = sediment load
- D50 = sediment size
- Qw = water discharge
- S = slope

15
Q

How are causes and effects of water erosion linked in a system?

A

This can be describe by a system know as “catchment system dynamics”. There are natural and human drivers such as fire/climate change/vegetation and management. The causes are e.g. off-site sediment accumulation, water availability.

16
Q

What are synonyms for local and non-local effects of water erosion?

A

On site // off-site effects.

17
Q

On what three principles is the prevent of soil water erosion based?

A
  1. Land capability: is the land prone to erosion, determine management practices on that
  2. Surface cover: living/dead organic material to decrease rainfall impact and improve infiltration rate.
  3. Run-off: prevent run-off to avoid erosion.
