Module 5 Vocabulary Flashcards
Binary Compounds
compounds made of only 2 elements
Polyatomic Ion
a covalently bonded group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge and acts as a unit
Decomposition Reaction
a chemical reaction in which a compound break down into 2 or more simpler substances
Single Replacement
a chemical reaction in which 1 element takes the place of another element in a compound
Double Replacement
a chemical reaction in which 2 compounds exchange positive ions and form new compounds
Combustion Reaction
a chemical reaction in which a substance reacts rapidly with oxygen often producing heat and light
Chemical Energy
the energy stored in chemical bonds
Synthesis Reaction
a chemical reaction in which 2 or more substances react to form a single compound
Mole
an amount of a substance that contains approximately 6.02 time 10 to the 23rd power particles (know as Avogadro’s number) of the substance
Endothermic Reaction
a chemical reaction that absorbs energy from its surroundings
Exothermic Reaction
a chemical reaction that releases energy into it surroundings
Cation
positively charged ion
Anion
negatively charged ion
Law of Conservation of Energy
energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only be transformed from one type to another
