Module 5 - Part 1 Flashcards
Thomas H. Morgan & Lily Vaughan Morgan
Well known for their discovery of X-linkage in fruit flies
Alfred H. Sturtevant
Was an undergrad in Morgans lab. He invented gene mapping (tech used to map x-chromo & others)
Mendel’s 2nd Law
Law of independent assortment.
Alleles on Dif chromosomes segregate independently from another.
CIS
Same colour on same side. (In terms of chromosome and homolog)
TRANS
Same colour, opposite side. (In terms of chromosome and homolog)
Test cross
A cross between a heterozygous F1 organism & the homozygous recessive parent (P1) organism
- determines the recombinant frequency
Recombinant frequency (RF)
The freq. of the recombinant progeny produced by the heterozygous F1
RF Formula
of recombinants/ # of recombinants + # of parental
How are recombinants generated?
- crossover = chiasma = physical event
- reciprocal exchange of DNA between homologous chromosomes during meiosis
- occurs randomly along the chromosomes
What does the frequency of crossovers depend on?
The distance between alleles
Nomenclature for genes: AB/ab
- same chromosome
- the two dom alleles are in the CIS conformation
Nomenclature for genes: Ab/aB
- same chromosome
- the two dom alleles are in the TRANS conformation
