Module 5 NTR definitions Flashcards
What is the half-life of a reactant?
Time taken for the concentration of the reactant to reduce by half
What is Ea?
activation energy
What is A?
pre-exponential factor
What is R?
Gas constant, 8.314
What is enthalpy change of atomisation?
The enthalpy change when the one mole of gaseous atoms is formed from its element under standard conditions?
What is first electron affinity?
The enthalpy change when one electron is added to each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of -1 gaseous ions
What is second electron affinity?
The enthalpy change when one electron is added to each ion in one mole of gaseous -1 ions, to form one mole of gaseous 2- ions
What is Entropy, S?
A measure of the dispersal of energy in a system. The entropy is greater when the system is more disordered. A system becomes energetically more stable when it becomes more disordered
What is standard entropy change, ΔS?
The entropy change that accompanies a reaction in the molar quantities expressed in a chemical equation under standard conditions, all reactants and products being in their standard states
What is a oxidising agent?
A reagent that oxides (takes electrons from) another species, hence is reduced itself
What is a reducing agent?
A reagent that reduces (adds electrons to) another species, hence is oxidised itself
