Module 5 - Nonblood Specimen Collection Flashcards
What specimen is common for diagnostic test? (to topic)
Urine
Why is urinalysis often ordered?
- Low-cost
- Low-risk
- Can provide valuable information about patient’s condition, ex: glucose or hormone levels
What type of urine tests providers order?
- Routine
- 24-hour
- Culture & sensitivity (C&S)
- Drug testing
Define culture and sensitivity (C&S) urine test
A urine test performed by growing any microorganisms on a urine sample culture to test for urinary tract infections
What are the methods to collecting urine?
- Random
- First morning urine
- Fasting
- Clean-catch midstream
- Catheter
- Suprapubic
What is the “random” method?
When urine specimen collected at ANY TIME of the day for screening purposes.
Does the “random” method require preparation?
No.
What is the “fasting” method?
Not eating or drinking anything except water for a period of time, often for 8-12 hours
What is the “clean-catch midstream” method?
Performing urine collection w/ cleaned genital area to prevent bacterial contamination.
What is the “first morning urine” method?
Urine you void after getting up for the day. For night shift individuals, void is after sleeping during the day.
What is the “catheter” method?
a specimen collected by inserting a thin, flexible tube (catheter) into the bladder
What is the “suprapubic” method?
a sterile urine sample collected by inserting a needle into the lower abdomen and into the bladder
When a patient is performing a urine collection, what should you do?
- Provide all helpful information to help patient perform collection properly
- Allow patient to ask questions
- Repeat information when necessary
- Provide written information if patient needs or requests it
When performing urine testing, what PPE do you wear? When should you change them?
Wear gloves // change gloves between specimens
When performing urine tests, what should you do to prevent accidental spelling?
- Perform test on flat surface
- Keep specimen as stable as possible
What is the most commonly performed urine test?
Random or routine collection
When it is a random or routine collection, it requires no…
preparation or time restrictions
For random or routine collection, even though it has no preparation or time restrictions. You should still…
Document time of collection
Common instructions of ALL urine specimen collections: Part 1
- Wash hands before and after handling urine specimens
- Wear gloves at all times & change gloves between specimens
- Confirm patient identification
Common instructions of ALL urine specimen collections: Part 2
- Always use a sterile specimen container
- Label all specimens on side of the container (not lid)
- Label all specimens in front of patient
Common instructions of ALL urine specimen collections: Part 3
- Promptly test or transport specimens
- Dispose of urine per facility guidelines (unless contaminated w/ blood, where it must be disposed as bio-hazard waste)
If urine specimen is contaminated w/ blood, what should you do?
Dispose the urine in biohazard waste (though follow facility guideline)
What special urine tests require more detailed collection processes?
- glucose tolerance test (GTT)
- postprandial
- 24-hour urine collection
- drug testing
What does GTT stand for?
Glucose tolerance test
