What is Euthanasia?
- Voluntary euthanasia?
Euthanasia refers to deliberately ending someone’s life in order to end their suffering
Voluntary Euthanasia is euthanasia done at the request of the person.
What is Voluntary Assisted Dying?
Or Medical assistance in dying = assisted suicide
- someone is provided a lethal dose of drugs, which they can take later, at the time of their choosing, to end their own life peacefully.
What is an issue creating conflict?
An issue prevalent in the society where there is different/opposing ideas due to people’s understanding, experiences and beliefs.
May end in a serious disagreement or argument within groups of people.

- Via a joint committee, ‘End-of-life’ choices were established.

- voluntary assisted dying bill passed in LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL - 2021, MID YEAR in WA, Applications, and Processing is to begin as per bill for VAD.
Why is VAD an issue in WA?
There are opposing views in a general form from the general public causing the issue to have tension and conflict.
Not as evident now because the processing is yet to begin.
What are the reasons for support of VAD?
- Human Right - that the individual has sole right over their body and life
- Give Peaceful Death, rather than one involving SIGNIFICANT SUFFERING, at the end of life.
- To Do Better for the Dignity of each person in their BIRTH, LIFE, AND DEATH.
- to go with dignity and positive encounters with life and people. - Human Society aim - Protect human dignity and life

What are the reasons people go AGAINST VAD?
- Civilisation ethics
- emotional concerns may involve CROSSING A THRESHOLD that will Affect the Entire Society in Perpetuity. - Devalues Human Life
- dangerous for doctors and patients
- harmful when the wrong people have the power to do this - ‘Inalienable right’ exists to bring life and that there are better ways of dealing with sufferings
- ‘playing god’ - Medicine and advancements to be used to save lives and protect.
- changes the principle of ‘saving lives’ as a society and enables death culture.
The Basic understanding of a human person is expressed where?
- Revelation - ‘God Speaks’ through scripture and tradition
- Apostolic succession - Jesus chooses leaders (commissions/gives authority) as bishops of the church
- can be traced back to when the apostles were chosen by Jesus. - Tradition - the teachings revived and handed down from the works/understanding of previous bishops.
- Magisterium - ‘teacher’

- Made of the Pope and bishops who RESOLVE uncertainties by discerning new teachings
- everyone receives GOD’S TRUTH, but the magisterium GIVES TEACHINGS TO HELP PEOPLE MAKE DECISIONS SO THEY MAY DO JUST TO THE TRUTH.
Why does the church RESPOND to an issue which is creating conflict in society?
- ESPECIALLY ON VAD
The church as a GROUP/ SOCIAL COMMUNITY has its own WORLDY VIEW AND BELIEFS on Topics that affect society and how the world works.
- INFORMED AND SHAPED FROM ITS UNDERSTANDINGS FROM THE REVELATION: SCRIPTURE AND TRADITION.

EXPLAIN - Why does the church RESPOND to an issue which is creating conflict in society?
**CHURCH UNDERSTANDS THE VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE **
Church belief is that LIFE IS GOD GIVEN, and therefore it is NOT A CHOICE.
- it should never be ‘TAKEN AWAY, from God’s Will
As the CULIMMINATION of his creation, God makes his creation (HUMANS) and their HUMANITY - “IN HIS OWN IMAGE AND LIKENESS’ (Genesis 1:27)
- Humans are representations of GOD, therefore we have a duty to live GODLY.
- THEREFORE RESPECT OUR BODY AND NOT HARM IT.
THEREFORE at times where there is an ATTACK ON HUMAN DIGNITY, the CATHOLIC CHURCH is called to UPHOLD AND PROTECT THE human dignity of ANYONE INVOLVED.
EXPLAIN - Why does the church RESPOND to an issue which is creating conflict in society?
**RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CHURCH TO EXPRESS ITS UNDERSTANDING OF GOD’S LOVE AND WILL FOR THE GOODNESS OF PEOPLE. **
GOD is the TRINITY - FATHER, SON, and the HOLY SPIRIT.
Father sent the son who is HALF HUMAN AND HALF DIVINE.
- human element of JESUS transferred the HOLY SPIRIT again, to people which gave them the RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP THE HOLY SPIRIT WORKING INSIDE A MAN.
- PART OF PEOPLE’S VOCATION TO HAVE THIS REPOSNIBILITY.
THE CHURCH’S RESPONSIBILITY is to be the COLLECTIVE BODY OF JESUS
- act, care and respond to bring Jesus
- ensure people experience Jesus
How is the understanding of human dignity and the church’s responsibility taught/ understood?
- Jesus through REVELATION taught of the GOOD SAMARITAN
- ‘go to the marginal - help everyone because of equal dignity.’
- everyone has a responsibility to do so. - Church teaching MAGERTERIUM
- social justice teachings of the tradition
- specifically The COMMON GOOD.
By having this the CHURCH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST.

WHY DOES THE CHURCH EXPRESS ITS VIEWS AGAINST VAD?
BECAUSE THE ACT OF EUTHANASIA AND VAD IS AGAINST THE CATHOLIC BELIEFS
Why do religions express their beliefs?
- SEEKS to help people to respond to the INVIATION of GOD to enter into COMMUNION WITH him.
- BELIEFS (our Christian faith), GIVES EXPRESSION to WHO GOD IS, WHO WE ARE, AND HOW WE CAN AND SHOULD RESPOND TO GOD.
