How did Islam reach Southeast Asia and eventually the Philippine archipelago?
The Missionary theory
- Islam arrived in these islands through Muslim missionaries who were solely motivated by religious reasons and proselytizing zeal for Islam.
The Trade Theory
- The Muslim traders, and not the missionaries, who introduced Islam in the islands.
Islam reached Southeast Asia and the Philippine archipelago through a combination of trade, missionary efforts, and the influence of Muslim leaders and settlers. The southern islands of Sulu, Palawan, and Mindanao were particularly exposed to Islamic expansion due to their proximity to the East Indies, where trade and cultural exchanges were common. Muslim Arab traders likely reached the Philippines by the tenth century, with archaeological evidence indicating the presence of a Muslim settlement in Jolo by the late 13th or early 14th century. The spread of Islam was driven by both religious zeal and profitable trade, making it a gradual and multifaceted process.
