Module 5 - Heredity Flashcards
What is pollination?
The transfer of pollen to a stigma, ovule, flower, or plant to allow fertilization.
Is pollination sexual or asexual reproduction? List the 2 main categories.
It can be either. Pollination occurs through either cross pollination (sexual) or self pollination (asexual).
What are the 4 types of pollination?
Wind pollination, bird pollination, insect pollination and pollination by other animals.
List the 4 types of asexual reproduction.
Binary fission, budding, spores and fragmentation.
What is binary fission? What microbes reproduce via binary fission?
The parent cell grows and then splits down the middle to form 2 identical daughter cells. This can occur very rapidly in the right conditions. Bacteria, protists and some algae/fungi reproduce through fission.
What is external fertilisation? List a way in which this occurs.
It is fertilisation that occurs outside the body. Corals, for example, release large amounts of gametes at the same time into the water in the hopes that some are fertilised.
What is internal fertilisation? List a way in which this occurs.
Fertilisation that occurs inside the body. E.g. reptiles: Most fertilise their eggs internally and then deposit them outside the mother’s body for development.
Give some disadvantages of external fertilisation.
Dehydration is not a risk and fewer eggs are required for a successful number of surviving offspring (higher chance of fertilisation).
