Theory
Explanation using an integrated set of principles that organizes predictions/observations
Hypothesis
A testable prediction that is implied by a theory
Falsifiability
Possibility that an idea, hypothesis or theory can be disproven by observation or experiment
Operational Definition
carefully worded procedure used in research study
Replication
Repeating the essence of a study with different participants/different situations to see if the same result will be produced
Case study
Descriptive technique which individual/group studies in depth hoping to reveal universal principles
Naturalistic observation
Observing/recording behavior in a natural situation with no manipulation or control of the situation
Survey
A technique for observing attitudes/behaviors of a randomly sampled group (self-reported)
Sampling bias
A flawed sampling process that results in an unrepresentative sample
Population
a group of people that are being studied
Random sample
A sample that fairly represents the population because there’s an equal chance of inclusion
