module 5 Flashcards
three categories of pick strategies
- Picker to goods
- Goods to picker
- Automated picking
can also be used with conveyors
Cluster Picking
is where operators pick product for a number of orders at the same time
Batch Picking
products are picked from defined areas in the warehouse and each picker is assigned to a specific zone
Zone Picking
orders are combined and released at specific times during the day
Wave picking
Orders pickers do not need to roam the warehouse walking to and from the dedicated pick faces
Eliminate picker travel time and use less labour
typically, a goods to goods person systems involve storing the inventory in very narrow aisle racking or an AS/AN system
Omit the dedicated pick face
when the product is placed into a high-density automated system
Product Security
the pick stations are designed for employee comfort
Ergonomic workstations
pick station allows high worker productivity
Speed in order selection
order picking using a person-to-person station tends to be more accurate because operators are typically handing one SKU at a time, making error less likely
Accuracy
Staff can work in parallel, unaffected by each other
Decoupled workstations
Orders pickers are highly utilized because they don’t need to wait for work
High utilization workstations
the storage system caan absorb the new loads
Efficiently accommodates
ideal for slow-moving product in retail and wholesale warehouses
Compact picking system
ideal for businesses where a large number of order lines are fulfilled from a relatively small number of SKU’s
Order distribution system
with loads weight typically falling in a range of 40 to 250 kilograms
Mini load AS/RS systems
important from a disability worker point of view
Ergonomic Workstation
a common sight in manufacturing operations and on automotive production lines
Robotics
Warehouses have a number of different types of handling equipment at their disposal to undertake the picking process. These range from the relatively cheap trolley through mechanical equipment to large conveyors and automated systems.
Handling Equipment
this equipment is less capital intensive and the most labour intensives
Manual and Mechanical Handling Equipment
These are pushed along picking aisles or shelving by pickers and have shelves or compartments or slots into which the picked items are placed or hung
Trolley/ cages/carts/ garment rails
have hydraulic pumps enable the operator to lift a pallet sufficiently to be able to move it across the warehouse floor
Hand pallet truck, pallet jack, powered pallet truck, manual stacker truck
These trucks are also utilized to pick full pallets form the racking
Forklift trucks
