Module 4.1 Balancing Equations Flashcards
C₄H₁₀ + O₂———> CO₂ + H₂O
First put coefficient (numbers) in front of each formula (if there is no coefficient written it is a 1)
To balance take the coefficient and * by the subscript on the left and balance on the right side
C₄H₁₀ + O₂———> CO₂ + H₂O
becomes
C₄H₁₀ + O₂———> 4CO₂ + H₂O (add a 4 in front of the C on the right side)
C₄H₁₀ + 6.5O₂———> 4CO₂ + 5H₂O (can not have a fraction (6 1/2 ) so take the denominator (2) and * by all the coefficients
becomes
2C₄H₁₀ + 13O₂———> 8CO₂ + 10H₂O
Left side ———> right side
What does the left side , arrow , & right side of the equation stand for
Lefts side = Reactants (putting the materials together to form the products on the right side)
Arrow = yield
Right Side = Products
FeS + O₂———> Fe₂O₃ + SO₂
First put coefficient (numbers) in front of each formula (if there is no coefficient written it is a 1)
To balance take the coefficient and * by the subscript on the left and balance on the right side
FeS + O₂———> Fe₂O₃ + SO₂
becomes
2FeS + 3 1/2O₂———> Fe₂O₃ + 2SO₂ (can not have a fraction (6 1/2 ) so take the denominator (2) and * by all the coefficients
becomes
4FeS + 7O₂———> 2Fe₂O₃ + 4SO₂
Al(OH)₃ + H₂SO₄———> Al₂(SO₄)₃ + H₂O
First put coefficient (numbers) in front of each formula (if there is no coefficient written it is a 1)
To balance take the coefficient and * by the subscript on the left and balance on the right side
Al(OH)₃ + H₂SO₄———> Al₂(SO₄)₃ + H₂O
becomes
2Al(OH)₃ + 3H₂SO₄———> Al₂(SO₄)₃ + 6H₂O
