It’s a subjective experience which is interpreted within a religious framework. The concept originated in the 19th century, as a defence against the growing rationalism of western society.

A form of empirical religious experience. Empirical experiences are those which we have through our five senses of touch, taste, hearing, smell and sight.
One of the most common forms of religious experiences is that of seeing God through nature e.g a sunset.
