Module 4: Rates of Reaction Flashcards
What factors affect reaction rates?
- Temperature
- Surface Area
- Concentration
- Gas Pressure
- Catalyst
What is a catalyst?
Substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction
They do not use themselves up in a chemical reaction
By providing an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy
Draw a endo and exo thermic energy profile diagram
pg. 120 Excel book
What is activation energy?
The minimum energy required by the reactants to react to form products
A bond’s energy is…
is equal to the energy released when the bond is formed. When the atoms form the bond, they release a certain amount of energy; this amount is considered the ‘energy’ of the bond!
What happens when reactant energy is greater than product energy
R > P: change in enthalpy is -ve, and energy is being released
What happens when product energy is greater than reactant energy
P > R: change in enthalpy is +ve, and energy is being absorbed
Conservation of energy tells us that if the products of a reaction have less energy than the reactants…
Conservation of energy tells us that if the products of a reaction have less energy than the reactants, energy must have been released during the reaction. The resulting bonds would be more stable than the original ones.
The creation of chemical bonds requires energy from the surroundings. T or F
F: The creation of chemical bonds releases energy into the surroundings. It’s the breaking of chemical bonds that requires energy from the surroundings.
What is enthalpy
The change in heat energy of a reaction held at a constant pressure
