Why do nurses have to maintain professional development?
- To promote high practice and professional standards
- This is part of the required BCCNM quality assurance program
- An essential part of maintaining self-regulation
What is a professional development plan?
Confidential document that guides and record activities to work towards meeting the BCCNM standards.
All RN’s are required to maintain a professional development plan.
The professional development plan must be revised/developed each year.
In BC, nurses must participate in quality assurance activities, as required for renewing their nursing registration. What activities are required for quality assurance as outlined by the BCCNM?
Each year, nurses must:
- Complete a self-assessment (at renewal)
- Collect peer feedback
- Create a professional development plan
- Evaluate the impact of their learning on their practice, evaluate the effectiveness of last year’s plan

What is a nursing philosophy?
A statement that outlines a nurse’s values, ethics, and beliefs as well as their motivation for entering and being part of the profession.
