What are thetwo ways to state a person’s profession or nationality in French.

A
  1. without an article:
    name or subject + + job or nationality (lower case nationality)
    Examples:
    Marc est trés travailleur. Marc is very hardworking.
    Il est avocat. He is a lawyer.
    Il est canadien. He is Canadian.
    Mes soeurs sont intelligentes. My sisters are intelligent.
    Elles sont niédecins. They are doctors.
    Elles sont canadiennes. They are Canadian.
  2. Singular: C’est + indefinite article + noun
    Plural: Ce sont + les + noun (capitalize nationality)
    Examples:
    C’est un architecte. He is an architect.
    C’est une avocate. She is a lawyer.
    Ce sont des étudiants. They are students.
    C’est une Belge. She’s Belgian.

Whenever you modify the profession or nationality with an adjective or a phrase, you must use c’est or ce sont.
Examples:
Il est médecin. He is a doctor.
C’est un bon médecin. He is a good doctor.
Ils sont suisses. They are Swiss.
Ce sont des Suisses de Geneve. They’re Swiss from Geneva.
