Module 4: Core Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What types of bonds are broken and formed in the reaction of ethene and bromine?
Pi-bonds and sigma bonds are broken but only the sigma bonds are formed.
Hydrogen bromide will react with but-1-ene by a type of reaction producing two isomeric products. What is the reaction called, predict which will be the major product and why that will be the most stable product.
– Ellectrophillic Addition.
– 2-bromobutane will be the major product.
– It will be major product because the hydrogen adds to the carbon with more hydrogens already attached. This is beacuse it is the most stable carboncation.
What are structiral isomers?
– Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but different structural formula
What are stereoisomers?
– Stereoisomers ahve the ame structural formula but the atoms have a different arrangement in space
What does a curly arrow show in a reaction mechanism?
– The movement of pair of electrons.
What is meant by heterolytic fision?
– Heterolytic: one atom recieves both electrons
– Fission: breaking of a covalent bond.
What are some limitation of using radical substitution in organic synthesis?
– Mixtures of products are formed
– Substitutions of different positions along the chain
Benzene ——-> Nitrobenzene?
Reagent: HNO₃
Catalyst: H2SO4
