feudalism
medieval political, social, and economic system held together by the relationship
between landholding liege lords and the vassals
who were granted tenure of a portion of their land
and in turn swore allegiance to the liege lord.
vassal also offered military service and protection depending on individual negotiation
Romanesque
Medieval art that appears and resembles Roman art and architecture
Designates the history and culture of western Europe between 1050 and 1200 AD
relic
body parts, clothing, or objects associated with a holy figure, such as the Buddha or
Christ or a Christian saint.
reliquary
container for holding relics.

pilgrimage
journey to a holy place or place of high regards in devotion to proclaim one’s faith

nave
Middle walk of sanctuary
central area of an ancient Roman basilica
or of a church, demarcated from aisles by piers or
columns.
apse
A recess, usually semicircular, in the wall of a building, commonly found at the east end of a
church.
aisle
portion of a basilica flanking the nave and separated from it by a row of columns or piers.
barrel vault
semicylindrical in cross-section, is in effect a deep
arch or an uninterrupted series of arches, one behind the other, over an oblong space.
groin vault
or cross vault; is formed at the point at which two barrel vaults
intersect at right angles.

enclosed walkway; place for art exhibitions
western porch
a small, enclosed vestibule or covered rear entrance where worshippers could gather to socialize before and after the service
transept
part of a church with an axis that
crosses the nave at a right angle.
cathedral
A bishop’s church. The word derives
from cathedra, referring to the bishop’s chair.
baptistery
In Christian architecture, the building
used for baptism, usually situated next to a
church. Also, the designated area or hall within a
church for baptismal rites.
