Jelly Roll Norton
Early ragtime pianist who “ragged” music from a variety of genres by emphasizing a theme and adding the characteristic “march-like” ragtime bass
Scott Joplin
One of the most famous ragtime composers, made it popular. King of ragtime.
Maple Leaf Rag
Very famous rag song written by Scott Joplin about a club that he used to play in.
Buddy Bolden
One of the first and most important musicians from New Orleans to have a major influence on early jazz.
The Original Dixieland Jass Band
White jazz band from New Orleans who made the first ever jazz recordings. Their song Livery Stable Blues was an instant hit.
King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band
One of the first famous black jazz bands. Introduced the world to Louis Armstrong in the early 20s.
Dippermouth Blues
A song by King Oliver’s Creole Jazz band that foreshadowed the future of improvised soloing in jazz.
Harlem Renaissance
The cultural, social, and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem between the end of World War I and the middle of the 1930s. During this period Harlem was a cultural center, drawing black writers, artists, musicians, photographers, poets, and scholars.
King Oliver
Influential black bandleader/trumpet player, helped to bring jazz to Chicago
