Module 4-5 Flashcards
What are the layers of the earth based on density
Most dense (iron and nickel) is the core. Least dense is the crust
What are the layers of earth based on strength
Crust and upper mantle= cool and brittle.. break with stress
Mantle is ductile/ soft and has slow flowing movements
All layers are solid except
Outer core
Compare the lithosphere and asthenosphere
L- rigid layer
A-ductile layer
Continental v Oceanic crust
C- thick and low density
O- thin and high density
What are tectonic plates
Continental and oceanic crust. Cold, rigid plates that move on the warm flowing asthenosphere
Where are tectonic plate boundaries?
Where more earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain ranges occur
3 relative plate motions
Move apart- divergent
Move towards- convergent
Move past- transform
Divergent boundary
New lithosphere is formed. Force pushes ridge up and new rock is created in the center thus forcing plates apart… rift or valley is created
