Module 3 - Work and Conservation of Energy Flashcards
What is meant by the work done by a force
The transfer of energy as a result of a force causing the motion of an object
Define Work Done (Equation)
Work Done = Force x Distance moved in the Direction of the force
give 2 units for work done
- Joules ( J)
- NewtonMetres (Nm)
What component of the Force is doing work when the Force is acting at an angle to the motion of an object
- The component of the force parallel to the motion of the object
Why do forces at right angles to the motion of the object do no work
- They have no component parallel to the motion of the force
What is the principle of the conservation of energy
- “In a closed system the total energy remains constant”
What is meant by energy
The capacity for doing work
Answer the following about energy:
1. Scalar or Vector
2. Give the SI unit for energy
- Scalar
- Joules (J)
What are the 2 main types of energies
- Kinetic energy
- Potential energy
What is meant by potential energy
- Energy that is “hidden” or “stored”
What are the 9 different energy types
- Kinetic
- Gravitational potential
- Chemical
- Elastic potential
- Electrical potential
- Nuclear
- Radiant (EM)
- Sound
- Internal/Themal
What is Kinetic energy
Energy due to the motion of an object with mass
What is Gravitational Potential energy
Energy due to the position of an object in a gravitational field
What is Chemical energy
Energy contained within chemical bonds between atoms
What is Elastic potential energy
Energy stored due to the deformation of an object
What is Electrical potential energy
Energy due to the position of an object in an electric field
What is Nuclear energy
Energy within the nuclei of atoms
What is Radiant (EM) energy
Energy stored within oscillating magnetic and electric fields
What is Sound energy
Energy of mechanical waves due to movement of atoms
What is Internal / Thermal energy
The sum of potential and kinetic energies of atoms in a system
