Graphemes
A letter or letter combination that spells a single phoneme
Phonemes
A speech sound that combines with others to make words.
Phonics
A method of teaching reading that emphasizes the sounding out of letters, groups of letters, and familiar patterns of letters in order to read words.
Alphabetic Principle
The idea that words are composed of letters that make sounds
Irregular Words
Words that do not follow a predictable letter/sound pattern
Phonemic Awareness
The ability to break down and manipulate the individual sounds I spoken language
Phonological Awareness
The ability to detect and manipulate sounds at different levels of sound structure
Sight Words
Any word that is recognized automatically
Decoding
The ability to translate a word from print to speech, usually by employing knowledge of sound-symbol correspondance
Digraph
Two letters that spell a single speech sound
Syllable
Uninterrupted segment of speech consisting of at least one vowel sound
Morphology
The study of word form including affixes and rot/base words
Reading Fluency
Speed, accuracy, and prosody
Syntax
Grammatical rules that govern the structure if sentences and phrases.
Comprehension
Understanding what is read
Orthography
Written system that represents language; Also refers to spelling
Prosody
Reading with expression, intonation, and appropriate phrasing
Decodable text
Text in which a large portion of words (approximately 70-80 percent) comprise of sound symbol relations that have already been taught
Phonology
The study of the rule system which governs the sequencing of phonemes in a language
Dyslexia
A developmental reading disorder whose primary symptoms are poor word recognition and spelling
Hyperlexia
A developmental reading disorder characterized by good word recognition and poor language comprehension
Semantics
The study of word and phrase meanings
Pragmatics
The system of rules and conventions for using language and related gestures in social context; the study of that rule system
Simple View of Reading
A theory suggesting that reading comprehension is the product of word recognition and language comprehension
Phonetics
The study of linguistic speech sounds and how they are produced and perceived
Discourse
Communicative text or oral language, larger than a single sentence
Morpheme
The smallest meaningful unit of language
Science of Reading
A comprehensive body of research that encompasses years of scientific knowledge, spans across many languages and shares the contributions of experts from relevant disciplines such as education, special education, literacy, psychology, neurology, and more.
