What is a Verb?
A verb is a word that expresses an action or state of mind. Exp: I “lost” the keys to the house. [action] Andre “is” an engineer. [state of being]
What is an action verb?
An action verb expresses “physical” or “mental” action. Exp physical action: Who “borrowed” the scissors? Exp Mental action: “Imagine” his surprise.
What is a transitive verb?
A transitive verb expresses an action directed towards a person or thing. Exp: Steve “helped” his brother.
What is an intransitive verb?
An intransitive verb expresses action without passing action to a receiver. Exp: The bus “skidded” on the wet pavement.
Adverb
An adverb is a word that modifies the meaning of a verb. Easiest way to find adverb is to look for the verb in the sentence and then see if there is a word that describes how the action is being done. I ate (verb) the cookies quickly (adverb).
What is a linking verb?
Connects the subject and the predicate of a sentence. Exp/ Shirley “is” the captain of the school cheering squad.
What is a helping verb?
These verbs don’t mean anything on their own. They just help the main verb express their full meaning. Exp/ The school bus “had” broken down.
