Module 3: Methods Of Presentation of Geometric Forms (Line, Shape, and Volume) Flashcards
7 Elements of Art
Line, Shape, Form, Color, Space, Texture, and Value
Most basic element of art defined by a point moving in space. Line may be two-or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract
Can have different visual characteristics- thin, thick, dark light
Line
A line created by perception of interrupted marks or edges
Implied line
An element of art that is two-dimensional area of an object, flatm or limited to height or width.
Shapes
An element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width, and depth (as in cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder). It may also be free flowing.
Form or Volume
are natural shapes which can be symetrical or assymetrical
Organic shapes
are man-made or mechanical shapes, with clear, straight and sharp edges
Geometric shapes
An element of art by which positive and negative areas are defined or a sense of depth achieved in a work of art
Space
Is the area or part of an artwork’s composition that the subject occupies.
Positive space
The area around the positive space is called the _____.
Negative space
•Negative space in a composition can help identify
the _____
Focal point
An element of art made up of three properties:
hue, value, and intensity.
Color
name of color, shade of a color
Hue
hue’s lightness and darkness (a color’s
value changes when white or black is added)
is essentially how light or dark something
is on a scale of white to black
Value
quality of brightness and purity
Intensity
color is strong and bright
high intensity
color is faint and dull
low intensity
Value in art is essentially how light or dark something
is on a scale of white to black (with _____ being the
highest value and _____ being the lowest value).
white, black
An element of art that refers to the way
things feel, or look as if they might feel if
touched.
is the sensations caused by the
external surface of objects received
through the sense of touch.
Texture
Both ______ and ____ art forms use texture to
convey themes of the work.
two-dimensional and three-dimensional
