Module 3 Group 2 Flashcards
Common name given to group 2 metals?
Alkaline earth metals.
Most reactive in group 2?
Barium
Three physical properties of group 2 metals?
- High melting and boiling point.
- Low density metals.
- Form colourless (white) compounds.
Which subshell are the highest energy electrons in for group 2 metals?
S subshell.
Does reactivity increase or decrease down group 2? Why?
Increases, electrons are lost more easily because larger atomic radius and more shielding.
What happens to the first ionisation energy down group 2? Why?
Decreases because;
- Number of filled electron shells increases down the group leading to increased shielding.
- Increased atomic radius meaning a weaker force between the outer electron and the nucleus meaning less energy needed to remove electron.
What is the reaction called between group 2 metals and oxygen?
Redox reaction.
Equation for calciom and oxygen?
2CA (s) + O2 (g) -> 2CaO (s)
Products when group 2 metals react with water?
Hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
What element in group 2 doesn’t react with water?
Beryllium.
Which group 2 element raects slowly with water/
Magnesuim.
What is oxidised and reduced in a reaction between group 2 metal and water?
The metal is oxidised and one hydrogen atom from each water is reduced.
What are the products when a group 2 metal reacts with dilute acid?
Salt and hydrogen gas.
Water reacting with group 2 metal?
Metal hydroxide.
What is the trend in hydroxide solubility down group 2?
Increases down the group. Mg is slightly soluble while Ba creates a strong alkaline solution.
