Module 3 - Chapter 3 - Motion Flashcards
State the equation to find speed
speed = distance / time
v = x/t
On a distance-time graph, what does the gradient represent
The gradient represents the speed of the object
How would you find the instantaneous speed of an object with a changing speed at a given point?
Draw a tangent on the graph and then use the gradient to find the speed
What is a vector quantity
A vector quantity has both magnitude and direction
State the equation to find average velocity
velocity = change in displacement / time
v = Δs/t
What does the gradient in a displacement-time graph represent
The gradient represents the velocity of the object. (the difference between velocity and speed is that velocity has a direction)
State the equation for acceleration
acceleration = change in velocity / time
a = Δv/t
What does the gradient of a velocity-time graph represent
The gradient of a velocity-time graph represents the acceleration
What does the area under the velocity-time graph represent
The area under a velocity time graph represents the displacement
What is the equation to find the stopping distance of a car
stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance
What is the equation to find the thinking distance
Thinking distance = speed x reaction time in seconds
What is the value you should use for g in physics
9.81 m/s²
What are the suvat equations
v = u + at
s = ut + ½at²
v² = u² + 2as
s = ((v + u) / 2)t
s = vt - ½at²
What does each letter represent in the suvat equations
s = displacement
u = initial velocity
v = final velocity
a = acceleration
t = time taken
What happens to a projectile in the air assuming air resistance is negligible
The vertical velocity will change due to acceleration due to gravity, the horizontal velocity will remain constant and the horizontal displacement will change as well as the vertical displacement as long as the projectile doesn’t land at the same vertical height as when it was launched
