ATSDR
Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry; prevents illness/disease from toxic/hazardous substances
CDC
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; responsible for health promotion, disease prevention, reduction of injury or disability
CHIP
Children’s Health Insurance Program; an insurance program that serves uninsured children and pregnant women who do not qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private health care insurance
FDA
Food and Drug Administration; ensures the safety and effectiveness of foods, drugs, medical devices, veterinary drugs, and cosmetics. Also regulates tobacco.
Health care networks
Groups of hospitals, physicians, other health care providers, insurers, and/or agencies collaborate to provide many types of health care in a community
Hospital system
Consists of two or more hospitals or other health care facilities that are owned, leased, or managed by an organization such as a corporation. Oversight is provided by a single board of directors.
HRSA
Health Resources and Services Administration; improves access to healthcare
IHS
Indian Health Service; improves the physicial, psychological, and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska natives
IPA
Independent Practice Association; a type of group practice where physicians work together to provide services while sharing economic risk
Medicaid
A health insurance program targeted at low-income individuals and families who meet specific requirements. The eligibility rules and the services provided vary by state

Medical coverage for people aged 65 or older, along with younger people who have certain disabilities

Specialty
A branch of medicine that focuses on a particular area of expertise
TRICARE
The managed health care program of the DoD that serves active-duty service members, retirees, and their families from all seven services branches. Besides immediate family members, survivors and certain former spouses may receive benefits
Urgent Care Centers
Walk-in clinics that may be staffed by physicians or mid-level providers such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners. These centers may have extended hours and usually provide care for acute illnesses and injuries that are beyond the scope of care of a typical primary care practice
