United Nations convention of the law of the sea. UNCLOS
Result from 3rd UN conference of the law of the sea.
Took place between: 1973 and 1982
Defines the rights and responsibility of nations with respect to their use of the worlds oceans establishing guidelines for business environment, and management of natural resources
International waters
The area of the sea that are not under jurisdiction of any country
Territorial Zones
Belt of coastal waters, extending at most 12 nautical miles from the baseline (usually the mean low watermark) of a coastal state
Exclusive economic zone
Establish in the UN convention on the law of the sea zone of exploitation, extending 200 nautical miles from a coastal state that has exclusive mineral and fishing rights over it.

Median line principal
An approach to dividing and creating boundaries at the midpoint between two places
The EEZ for marine time countries located closer to each other than 200 miles is located halfway in between so 100 nautical miles
Maritime boundary
An international boundary that lies in the ocean. like all boundaries it is a vertical plane. Extending from the seafloor to the upper limit of the airspace in the atmosphere above the water.
