An area with centralized authority that has overall power/control over a region
independent state
A state that rules itself
sovereign state
Has overall authority over the people and land within

A group of people sharing the same cultural traits in the same area
Nation State
The place in which people with shared ideas stay within the boundaries
Nationalism
Sense of belonging to a national culture and belonging to a nation
Stateless nation
An ethnic group that does not have its own state and is not the majority population anywhere (The kurds)
Multinational
A county containing multiple cultural groups
Multi State nation
Ethnic groups that are divided by international boundaries(kurds or korea)
Autonomous region
A dependent territory of a country that has some sort of self government (aruba or curacao)
semi autonomous region
A dependent territory in a country that has partial self government.
self determination
A nations ability to determine its own statehood and form its own allegiances and government.
core area
A small area form which a country grows overtime.
Escarpments
slopes that break up the general flow of terrain
Effective Sovereignty
A state that has power to enforce its sovereignty beyond its territory
Devolution
The movement of power from central to regional government
Ethnonationalism
Where a nation is defined in terms of ethnic identity
Neocolonialism
A set of strategies by which a wealthy/powerful country extend their influence over lesser countries
peripheral states
states that have little industrial development and mostly rely on agriculture
core states
states that have the most advanced industrial development (military tech and complex systems)
shatterbelt
A unstable area between two ethnic and culturally disagreeing countries.
choke point
A narrow passage that restricts traffic to another region
strait
A narrow body of water connecting two larger bodies of water
boundry
a clear line that separates territories
median line principle
A dividing line that creates boundaries at a midpoint between two places
border line
A region on both sides of an international boundary where national cultures overlap and blend.
fronteir
A region at the margins of state control and settlement
Enclave
A territory surrounded by a country but not ruled by it
Exclave
Part of a national territory separated form the main body of the country.(Alaska)
