Module 2.2 - Nature of Quantities Flashcards
What is meant by the term ‘scalar quantity’?
Has magnitude but no direction
What is meant by the term ‘scalar quantity’?
Has magnitude and a direction
What is meant by the term ‘displacement’?
The distance moved by an object in a particular direction. It is a vector quantity
What is meant by the term ‘vector triangle’?
A type of scale diagram with 2 vectors, drawn tip-to-tail, to show how they can be added together
What is meant by the term ‘resultant vector’?
or sum of the 2 vectors forms the 3rd side of the triangle
What is meant by the term ‘components of a vector’?
The parts of a vector in 2 perpendicular directions. The process is called resolving the vector
What is meant by the term ‘mass’?
matter content of a body
What is meant by the term ‘density’?
mass per unit volume
What is meant by the term ‘volume’?
3 dimensional space occupied by a body
What is meant by the term ‘distance’?
length from one point to another
What is meant by the term ‘speed’?
distance travelled per unit time
What is meant by the term ‘energy’?
work done
What is meant by the term ‘power’?
energy converted/work done per unit time
Give some examples of scalar quantities.
- mass
- density
- volume
- distance
- speed
- energy
- power
What is meant by the term ‘weight’?
force, acting downwards through a body, due to gravity
What is meant by the term ‘pressure’?
force per unit area
What is meant by the term ‘impulse’?
force x time
What is meant by the term ‘displacement’?
distance from a specific point in a particular direction
What is meant by the term ‘velocity’?
displacement per unit time
What is meant by the term ‘acceleration’?
change in velocity per unit time
What is meant by the term ‘momentum’?
mass x velocity
How do you add vectors that aren’t a right angles?
- use vector triangle but cant use Pythagoras
- do a scale drawing of the vector triangle & use a ruler to measure the size of the resultant & a protractor to find its direction
- ALWAYS state angles with reference to a specified direction
